Fall floral cake

I love a good set of florals. The more vibrant, the more full, the more whimsical, the better. Especially when they are put on top of a cake! This beautiful cake that I did for a wedding a few weeks back has fall vibes and it's making me yearn for cooler days. Not to mention, the cake was delish too. Dark chocolate brownie cake with whipped chocolate ganache filling, all topped with vanilla buttercream and a chocolate ganache drizzle. A little peak-a-boo cake here and there. What’s not to love?

Have an event coming up that you want to make a cake for? I highly suggest using flowers as an easy way to add visual flair. You will get all the ooh’s and ahh’s simply by adding a few fresh flowers to the top and even sides of your cake. Plus, the benefit of using flowers it that they mask any imperfections with the top or edge of the cake.

If you’re planning on trying out fresh florals for your next bake, make sure to have a few things handy with these five tips and tricks:

  1. Select some inspiration photos.

I always find it much easier to build a floral cake topper if I have something in mind already. Scour Pinterest for inspiration or even check out some of the cakes that I have done! It’s always easier to build and recreate what you see, especially when you are first starting out on your floral cake topper journey.

  2. Pick flowers that aren’t quite blooming in full yet, or slightly opened.

Whether you are getting flowers from your farmer’s market or event the grocery store (I have actually found some amazing flowers at Ralphs!) make sure you pick the blooms that are not yet fully open. Once they are on top of the cake for a day or so, they will automatically open up more.

  3. Make sure to tape the ends of your

Using flower tape - clear or green - cut the ends of the florals to the size of your cake and liking, and wrap the ends with the tape. Make sure to cover the very tips too! This will ensure nothing seeps into your cake, especially the florals that you need to secure on top by sticking somewhat inside the cake.

  4. Greenery is your best friend!

Where you can, add greenery! Eucalyptus leaves, ferns, etc. They add fullness without the cost of roses or other blooms. When getting your other flowers, ask the florist if they have any extra greenery items lying around. They often will give you a small bunch without charging for them.

  5. Roses are the best. But other flowers are good too!

Roses are sometimes expensive, but other flowers can be a great substitute for your home cake! You can do carnations, little buds, baby’s breath, all greenery, and more. So many options in case you don’t want to splurge on the roses.
